Fly Fishing:
Fly fishing has to be the main attraction within Dullstroom, as it’s known as a fishing town. Here you can catch rainbow and brown trout with a fly fishing rod and flies. Majority of the accommodation available in Dullstroom offers their own fly fishing, but if not, The Village Angler and Mavungana (the local fly fishing stores) are there to help you on which dam you could fish at if you’re a visitor.
Taking a stroll through town:
Dullstroom’s town is a hub for local owned art galleries and craft stores, the likes of Dimitrov and iCreate. iCreate offers classes for those who would like to learn how to mosaic, and for those who already know how to mosaic. The town has restaurants for every type of cuisine and atmosphere. The Dullstroom Inn, The Poacher, and The Duck and Trout offer quality pub food with charm. Although winter in Dullstroom has its charm, it can get extremely cold, so needless to say, every restaurant has a wood burning fire to make it extra cosy during the winter period. Art of Food has good quality food, which is beautifully presented and using fresh produce in season. It is one of my all time favourite restaurants. Mrs. Simpsons has scrumptious food with a great atmosphere, but unfortunately everyone else enjoys Mrs. Simpsons too, so you would have to book a few weeks in advance.
Wild about Whisky has the largest collection of whiskies in the Southern Hemisphere and is open for whisky tasting and whisky pairing, sundowners and drinks. Apart from collecting whisky, they also have quite a big collection of gin, and also offer gin tasting.
For the animal lovers:
Bring carrots and apples along and take a drive to Dunkeld’s Equestrian Estate and visit the horses and feed them hay which is available at the stables. Apart from the horses, Dunkeld has a variety of buck and zebra which roam around the estate.
At the municipal dam-Dullstroom on the Dam, they have horses, ducks, chickens, bunnies and 2 pot belly pigs. Bring your left over food and bread and feed the animals who always look forward to last night’s lasagne or this morning’s leftover baked bread.
Take a drive outside town:
For those who enjoy the scenic route, take a drive to Highland Gate or Walkersons Hotel & Spa. Enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner at Highland Gate, or if you just want to experience the scenery, I suggest having coffee in the lounge area in the clubhouse. Walkerson’s has this ‘elite’ feel to it, they don’t welcome day visitors to fish at their pristine waters, only hotel guests and residents are allowed to fish there. Regardless, their food is delicious. Enjoy hearty soup with homemade bread by the fire. Walkerson’s has that English country charm without having to spend money on a plane ticket to the U.K.
Witness Dullstroom’s sunsets:
This is when the smell of smoke from the chimneys, copious amounts of sherry and hot chocolate fill the air, especially in the winter months. Bundle up with scarves, beanies, and coats, and sit outside by the dam whilst sipping on your sherry and taking numerous amounts of family photos or enjoy beautiful backdrops whilst you fish.
